Shawn O'Brien
Men's & Women's
Head Golf Coach
1st Year

Shawn O'Brien is in his first season as head men's and women's golf coach at Montana State Billings. This is his fourth season of coaching and second at the collegiate level. O'Brien most recently was a volunteer assistant women's basketball and golf coach for MSUB last year. Prior to that, he was an assistant coach for boys basketball at Belfield High School (N.D.) in 2006-07 and was an assistant coach for the girls varsity at Campbell County High School (Wyo.) in 2007-08.

“We welcome Coach O’Brien as our new head men’s and women’s golf coach,” Athletic Director Dr. Gary Gray said. “We’re excited to combine both teams and have one person oversee both programs. I know Shawn will work hard and do a great job advancing our men’s and women’s golf teams.”

O'Brien is also in his second season as a volunteer women's basketball coach. "I feel very fortunate to have Shawn of my staff," said coach Woodin. "He is a quality person. Shawn will assist in many ways including scouting, post play and game/practice preparation."

O'Brien had an outstanding career as a kicker for the football squad at Dickinson State. In 2004 as a freshman he set a school and Dakota Athletic Conference record by hitting 17 field goals for the season. O'Brien also had 42 extra points for 93 points and led his team to the quarterfinals of the NAIA National Championships. He earned All-DAC and All-America honors that season. O'Brien was a three-time All-DAC honoree and still holds the school career records for field goals (34) and extra points (109). His 211 points ranks among the top five in school history.

He is the son of Deb and Thomas O'Brien and has a sister, Molly. He has a B.S. in Physical Education with a minor in Coaching from Dickinson State. He is currently working on completing his Master's degree in Counseling at MSUB.

"I am excited about the opportunity,” O’Brien said. "The athletes we have on our team are great student athletes and have a bright future." "I am excited to build upon a program which has already done very well for itself."
